South Luangwa National Park
The South Luangwa National Park is one of the best in Africa and is home to a wide range of animals, birds and vegetation. The park has an area of 9050km2. The Luangwa river which is the most undamaged major river system on the Continent, stretches across the National Park and along it there is a high concentration of game. Walking safaris have become famous in Zambia over time and their origin can be traced to this park about 60 years ago. They are believed to have been started by Norman Carr who is widely respected in the tourism industry in Zambia. It is believed that there are about 60 different animal species and 400 different species of birds. Buffalos are among the most seen animals in the park. Others include, giraffes, hippos (it is estimated that at least 50 hippos per kilometre are present along the Luangwa River. Zebras are a familiar sight too and are seen running in small herd of about 10. The zebras found in Zambia are different from those in the south and east Africa and the difference lies in the spacing of stripes. The ones in Zambia are evenly spaced. The Luangwa National is also home to Thornicroft’s giraffe, 14 species of antelope, hyenas, lions, tiger and plenty of elephants, leopards, servals, and crocodiles to mention but a few.
